Blog Post #5: Writing is a Struggle

Have you ever felt insecure about others reading your writing responses?  Have you ever written an essay and you felt like you did terribly bad on it? Well I personally have felt insecure to this day. Whenever a professor or a classmate would read my writing assignments, I would feel insecure. I honestly have written bad essays more than half of the time, especially in high school. I would expect to get a C or below, but I would surprisingly get at least a B. Whenever we would be assigned to write feedback on our peers essays, I would expect them to write negative comments. Though, when my classmates read my paper, they would recommend adding or removing a few things here and there. Overall they would say I did a great job. After looking over my assignment and reading their feedback, I have noticed that I do a great job introducing textual evidence. But I personally think more than half of the people in my English classes had no clue how to do a  peer review.. I would also ignore their comments since I knew my peers didn’t know what to write, and they would just say anything to get credit. I’m not going to lie and say I knew either because I didn’t. Which is why I would only comment when they had grammatical errors. However, now that my English professor taught the class the proper way to give feedback, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Looking at their feedback actually helped me strengthen my writing. Many of the times I just need to provide more detail or textual evidence. Though, whenever we are asked to write essays or any type of writing prompts, I have trouble starting my essays. For this reason I dread any type of writing assignments, but aside from writing the opening sentence/ paragraph I don’t struggle as much. I really hope writing these essays will help me write any future essays without struggling with my opening sentence.

  1. Carla, I could relate to a lot of points in your blog post. For one, I sometimes can also be insecure about others reading my writing assignments. Writing has always been something I struggled with because a lot of the time I’m not sure of what to say or how to word it. Like you, I always expect a worse grade than the one I receive. I think when we are writing we just tend to be hard on ourselves. I agree with you that peer review has helped me in writing my essay. Sometimes it’s helpful to see someone else’s perspective and thoughts. I would also like to improve on my essay starters and become better at going into depth. Thank you for sharing your experience with writing. I look forward to your other posts!

  2. Carla,

I can completely agree with you. I have also been insecure about my writing. I didn’t like peer review because I didn’t want anyone reading my stuff and leaving comments. Surprisingly, I’ve always liked writing and throughout high school I received good grades on my work. My peer review comments seem very similar to yours. I can completely agree with you over the fact that classmates don’t know how to peer review. That is why I don’t really like doing it now. I don’t feel like I get the best feedback. Also, I can agree with you over the fact that I also struggle opening my essay. The first lines have to be the best, in my opinion, and I honestly overthink it. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this week’s blog.
