Blog Post #4: Technology and Humans

In today’s society, we are surrounded by technology. Several of these new devices have helped us get more information just by asking a simple question or going online and use a search engine. Though, the most common virtual assistant that comes in handy is Siri. Many people consider Siri to be one of the best things that have ever been created for several reasons. The main reason being that it has the answers to more than half of our questions. I’m sure we have all asked Siri for help when we do our homework. Well, at least I see my youngest nephew asking Siri for answers to his math homework. While it helps him finish his homework quickly, it takes away the learning experience. When he is taking a test, Siri will not be there to help him answer the questions; therefore, it will begin to affect his grade. Now, we are able to get Siri’s attention by beginning our sentence with “Hey Siri”, but imagine if Siri began to talk on its own? The thought of it can easily give anyone goosebumps because it will be under its control. This will just become one step closer towards the end of human intelligence. People will begin to depend on this virtual assistance, and they will no longer know how to do their own thinking. However, those who are fascinated with the idea of technology advancing would think it would be awesome. Allowing virtual assistants to control themselves and having them talk about your favorite topics will make these people feel like they have some sort of companionship. I mean there are times when it could be helpful especially when you’re feeling lonesome. At least you would have someone to talk to without being judged or having that feeling that you are bothering them. Though I would say giving virtual assistance this power is too much on the creator’s side. The reason being that Siri is already being helpful just the way it is; therefore, there is no need to give it more power than it already has.

  1. Carla,
I agree that Siri has the answer to a lot of things and sometimes time saving. I do use Siri probably a couple of times per week and sometimes I ask her what time it is in a different place or I ask her to find nearby sushi places to go eat. I agree that there are many people who think Siri is one of the best features in all apple devices. It does come in handy for many people, Siri helps them set reminders in their phones or scheduling important events. I do ask her to help me with work sometimes and I agree sometimes asking Siri a question does take away the learning experience from me, but sometimes the question is too complicated to answer that I can’t help but ask her what is the answer. It would be really creepy if Siri started to talk whenever she wanted to and or she reminded you of a meeting out of nowhere instead of receiving a notification.

  2. Carla,
I really like that you used your personal experiences about your little cousin and Siri and that you also used examples of other really useful technology that we use today. I agree with you about how many people think of Siri as something very useful. I also agree that it is too powerful on the creators side because they have the power to receive information that you may have wanted to kept concealed. I like that Siri may not be my thing but it’s a great resource and sense of companionship for others. I like that you incorporated both sides of the argument and that you did not take too much biased. I liked reading your blog because you added a lot of your personal experience but still saw both sides which made it fun to read.
