Blog Post #2: Diversity’s Role in Society

Whenever we walk across our school campus, we run into people from different cultures, ethnicity, and sexuality. However, this does not mean many people have accepted this diversity, but they do not realize how much of an impact it has in our society. Whenever we want to go out to buy food, we have a variety of choices to choose from. For example, we have Korean, Chinese, Italian, American, and Mexican food. Imagine having to eat hot dogs for the rest of your life, that doesn’t sound so great does it?  Being limited to one source of food will have a great impact on the economy. The flow of money would be affected because everyone would be selling the same thing everywhere you would go. However, being among a mixture of people with different backgrounds can also help us expand our knowledge. A great example would be group projects. Even though many people dislike these types of projects, these projects may help you see things from different perspectives. Working with people that have different points of views than you do will allow you to learn new things. You may even learn more about something you already had previous knowledge about. Not only does diversity have an effect on our economy, workplace/school environment, it also has an effect in our internal environment. Imagine feeling scared to voice your opinion, living a life where you do not feel comfortable acting like yourself, or being made fun of because of your race. In most cases, younger kids feel this way because they get bullied for being different. Which often leads to depression and suicidal thoughts. Therefore, it is important for adults and young children to understand and accept diversity. People need to realize that every single person in this world including those who are different from us play an important role in our society and economy.

  1. I agree that on campus there are many students that come from different backgrounds. Transitioning from high school to college was great but what caught me off guard was seeing college students from different cultures and how much diversity the campus had. Everyday I learn something new from students around the campus or when I get paired up with students for class discussions or projects. I think group projects are fun especially for a class that I enjoy, I get to make new friends and learn new things. It is always fun to get to know new people because I can connect more to others. I agree that it is important to have your voice heard and express your thoughts and opinions. Making each member of the group feel welcomed and make them participate equally like the rest.

  2. I hadn’t even thought about the economic benefits to diversity but you make a very good point about that. Many people don’t take into account the variety of foods that they have the privilege of experiencing and that wouldn’t be possible without the diversity we have today! I really like that you showed two benefits from one aspect of diversity, the economic benefit and the benefit of having a plethora of food to choose from. I also like how you included the diversity on campus because my last two high schools that I attended were not very diverse at all and coming to college was a really great change from that. It’s so important to remember all the positive aspects of diversity and appreciate all people.
